Review of New York, New York

I grew up in the South, and I think NYC is great
Star Rating - 11/10/2021
I'm from the South and the perception I had was that New York was a filthy slum full of sketchy people and crime. I visited it, and it's actually on the other end of the spectrum. I visited for a week on the subway, out all day, and not once did I feel threatened. Compared to Austin, Dallas, Houston, or San Antonio, NYC feels super safe! There's so many more sketchy people elsewhere. I found out that NYC nowadays homes 95% of their homeless people (literally 95% -- look on Wikipedia). There's no trash and you can feel the money flowing everywhere

agreed! im from NC and ive always been told NY isnt the place you wanna be. 5th time visiting and i see more sketchy people at my local town gas station than i do in NY. chill people, good food, and amazing sights. would seriously move here if costs of living weren’t so high and it didn’t get so cold lol! people are constantly walking around cleaning i see more trash on the side of the highway in NC.

no one should be reviewing us a that they visited on vacation for a week. It's absurd. Reviews of the city and/or town or any geographical area should at least be accompanied by one year at least a minimum of residence so that they can get over the sugar high of the first few weeks in town and discard them and then additionally exclude the low points that over the course of the year show themselves to be a rare occurrence. This reviewer therefore cannot be taken seriously. Getting a hotel in Times Square and walking around town for a few afternoons gives you absolutely zero idea of what the daily ins and outs of actually living in the city are all about including the costs of housing, job prospects, taxes, the ability to create and make long-term connections with people. This discovery can not occur unless an extended period of time is spent actually living day in and day out in New York City or any city for that matter

Nyc is the best safest big city in the world. I lived there for 10 years didn’t feel unsafe once. Go there you will see it’s nothing like in the movies. Yes it got bad during the pandemic but that’s no longer the case and it’s getting back to its former great place that it once was

While I believe NYC is not as scary as most people believe, as a life long NYer who has never lived anywhere else, we have been having more of an uptick in crime since the pandemic. We also have not been as good about housing and caring for our homeless mentally ill population. While they are a small fraction of the population, they have many problems that need to be addressed aggressively by social services. And the city is dirtier than it was pre-pandemic. All that being said, NYC is not like in the movies. If you come here to visit there are so many things to do, sometimes for free like walking across the Brooklyn Bridge or Central Park. There are so many museums like the Metropolitan, Natural History, the Cooper-Hewitt, Jewish Museum. All kinds of architecture, the Bronx Zoo (probably the BEST zoo on the East Coast) Grand Concourse in the Bronx has the highest concentration of Art Deco architecture in the world. Any tourist anywhere has to be cautious. NYC is no different.
